Once a Month Mom/ June Once a Month Cooking

Have you all heard of Once a Month Cooking? I first heard about it on food.com, several of the people I "know" there will often feature OAMC recipes. I had always thought making a giant batch of breakfast burritos and freezing them made more sense than trying to make them each day. It's that whole economy of scale thing.... I think.

I recently stumbled upon the Once a Month Mom blog via Tiffany's blog, Eat at Home. The OAMM blog features monthly once a month menus that are divided into several different diets. The one that particularly peaked my interest was the "Whole Foods" menu, which features balanced homemade meals with as few processed ingredients as possible. The recipe suggestions fit easily into our low carb preferences (with great cheat day recipes like Roasted Garlic Mac and Cheese). The authors gather recipes from blogs and other internet sites and adapt them for freezer cooking.

So being the food obsessed hoarder that I am, I couldn't wait until the Saturday I got to try their June Whole Foods menu. The site is so detailed! It includes a shopping list, all of the recipes, instructions and even labels for the final product with reheating instructions.

I shopped on a Friday night and prepped just a couple of the recommended items. I also decided which recipes wouldn't get eaten by low carb hubby and x'ed those out. Saturday morning I started cooking around 9. I was totally finished by 3 PM, with several breaks throughout the day. I am pretty experienced at using recipes, but I never felt that the process was overwhelming. I am so pleased with all of the food and so thrilled to have my freezer stocked for the next few weeks of craziness.

I can also say the recipes are delicious since Hubs sampled three of them throughout the day (breakfast, lunch and dinner!...exactly why I need to have food stocked!) We did alter some of the recipes and skipped a couple altogether: cinnamon rolls (boo) and short ribs (because I forgot to buy them).

In all, it was a great experience. Something I look forward to doing again in July or August. I highly recommend taking a look at the site and menus. You could always pick just a few recipes to make and freeze if a whole day of cooking overwhelms you.

I must admit there's nothing like sitting at work on a Monday, knowing dinner is ready to just stick in the oven!

  1. I love this idea! I hope some day we live close enough so we can do this together. What a comforting feeling to have a good meal ready to go. Anything that makes life a little simpler is a good thing. What exactly did you make? Looking forward to pictures.

I need a little more info like how do you have fresh veges - salad n stuff? Also do you have any idea the cost of your meals. I would be interested. Wish we had a freezer. But I am going to adapt this to a weekly thing and see how it goes. Are you holding off the baskets for now?

    1. We still get bountiful baskets, I usually make a salad to accompany the frozen entree. It is hard for me to guess the exact cost because we buy our meat mostly ahead of time. Check out the website though, I bet they have a good discussion of that.
